| | Reproducible high quality finish: Automated polishing of complex steel tools
Polished steel tools with high precision surfaces are being used by manufacturers and suppliers in the automotive and aeronautical industries as well as in the fields of medical technology and electrical engineering to mass produce increasingly high quality components. In order to produce these tools faster and in reproducible quality in future, the Fraunhofer IPT is currently working together with nine industrial and scientific project partners to automate the tool surface polishing process. The aim of this work is to develop a new, automated polishing cell that will make the complex finishing process involved in the production of precision tools more cost-effective. Further Information

| | EuroMold 2006: Laser structured freeform surfaces
The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT will be presenting the latest findings from its joint "FlexOStruk" research project at EuroMold 2006 from November 29 until December 2. Over the course of this project, the Fraunhofer IPT and its nine industrial partners have developed a comprehenisve process with which to flexibly and rapidly produce design structures on tool surfaces. The process involves the use of near net 3D laser beam material removal to introduce design structures into plastic surfaces. Applications of this technique include the production of structured surfaces such as those found in car interiors where, for financial reasons, plastics are used to imitate the look and feel of leather.
